Back in 1970, a young and ambitious Alan Clements, worked at a five and dime store with a huge penny candy department in Homewood, Illinois. After managing the Ben Franklin store for a few years, customers, such as the local pizzeria and the bank, asked Al if he could supply their businesses with Spangler Dum Dum suckers on a regular basis. Needing more money to support a young family, Clements was inspired to grow the wholesale candy business. Even with all the passion and excitement Al had, the first few years of the newly named, Sweet Services, were slow utilizing direct mail to grow the company. Where was Shark Tank back in those days? Al would drive a Chevy panel van to a local trucking terminal picking up pallets of Dum Dum lollipops, and hand carry the cartons of suckers back to his one car garage in Olympia Fields, Illinois. In 1979, Sweet Services grew from a garage to a modest warehouse in Matteson, Illinois. Ten years later, Al’s hard work graduated Sweet Services to a mid-size warehouse in Orland Park, Illinois. Growing the warehouse meant more room for more candy! Candy categories expanded to chocolates, hard candies, soft candies, and lollipops. By 2001 the internet gave the bulk candy business the BOOM it needed! Business sky rocketed with leaps and bounds being able to sell across the United States. Due to the cyber business explosion, Sweet Services out grew ANOTHER warehouse and was forced to move into a large modern 6,000 square foot building in Frankfort, Illinois with 24 foot ceilings and plenty racking to store the candy. This is the American dream right here. Almost 50 years later, Sweet Services separates itself from other companies by never losing sight of customer relationships.
